03Per month

A small shop's month, and its year.

36 orders and $2,080.00 in sales, at the three sizes above. The listing fees that recur whether or not anything sells are counted too.

The shop. In a month it sells 20 prints, 12 mug sets, and 4 throws. Another 60 listings are waiting for a buyer, and Etsy renews each one every 4 months at $0.20: 15 renewals a month on average.

The ads. Etsy doesn’t publish how many orders it credits to Offsite Ads, so this month assumes 4 of the 36: 2 prints, 1 mug set, and 1 throw, at 15%.

The difference. Etsy’s fees come to $216.80 before ads and $260.90 with them. The same orders through Flint cost $91.52. That is $169.38 more kept this month, and $2,032.56 over a year of months like it.

04Offsite Ads

The fee you don't choose.

Etsy buys ads for your listings on Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and other sites. When a buyer clicks one and orders within 30 days, Etsy charges you 15% of the order, on top of every other fee.

Etsy picks the listings and the ads. You can’t choose which listings are advertised, and a single click can lead to more than one charged order within the window.

12% for life after $10,000. Once your shop makes $10,000 in sales over any 365 days, the rate drops to 12%, and you can no longer opt out, even if sales fall back later.

Capped at $100 an order. The cap only matters above $667 at 15%, so it doesn’t touch most handmade orders.

On Flint there is no ad fee. The buyers you bring from your own posts, newsletter, and markets pay through your link, and the only fee is 3.79% + 35¢.

06Etsy and Flint

Keep Etsy for discovery. Keep more on the buyers you bring.

Etsy’s marketplace brings shoppers who search Etsy, and its policy prohibits moving an Etsy transaction off Etsy, so let those buyers check out there. Your followers, newsletter readers, repeat customers, and market regulars already know where to find you. Send them a Flint link, and on the $25 art print with $5 shipping you keep $1.81 more per order, every order.

Thinking about moving more of your sales? Read selling on your own website instead of Etsy, or see how Flint compares with Big Cartel. Selling on another platform too? We worked out what Shopify really costs and Square Online fees the same way.

FAQ

Etsy fee questions, answered.

How much does Etsy take per sale?

For a US seller, Etsy charges a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus shipping, and 3% + 25¢ for payment processing on the whole order. On a $25 art print with $5 shipping, that is $3.30, or 11.0% of the $30.00 order. If the buyer clicked one of Etsy's Offsite Ads first, Etsy adds 15% more and takes $7.80. On orders from $30.00 to $166.00, Etsy keeps 9.8% to 11.0% before ads.

Does Etsy's transaction fee apply to shipping?

Yes. Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee is charged on the item price plus what you charge for shipping and gift wrap, and on any personalization fee. For US sellers it isn't charged on the sales tax Etsy collects. The payment processing fee, 3% + 25¢, is charged on everything the buyer pays, sales tax included.

How does the Etsy Offsite Ads fee work?

Etsy advertises listings on sites like Google, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. If a buyer clicks one of those ads and orders from your shop within 30 days, you pay 15% of the item price plus shipping, or 12% once your shop has made $10,000 in sales over 365 days. The fee is capped at $100 an order, and one click can lead to several charged orders.

Can I turn off Etsy Offsite Ads?

Only while your shop has never made $10,000 in sales over any 365 days. Once it has, Etsy enrolls the shop for the rest of its life at 12%, even if sales drop back below the threshold.

Does Etsy charge a monthly fee?

Not on its standard plan. Etsy Plus is optional and costs $10 a month, with 15 listing credits and $5 in Etsy Ads credit each month that expire if you don't use them. New shops may also pay a one-time set-up fee, which Etsy says varies by location.

Do US sellers pay Etsy's regulatory operating fee or a currency conversion fee?

No regulatory operating fee: Etsy charges it to sellers in Canada, France, Hungary, Italy, India, Spain, Türkiye, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam. The 2.5% currency conversion fee applies only if you list in a currency other than your payment account's, so a US seller listing in US dollars doesn't pay it.

What does the same order cost through Flint?

3.79% + 35¢ per card payment, with no monthly fee, no listing fees, and no transaction fee. On the $25 art print with $5 shipping, Flint's fee is $1.49 against Etsy's $3.30. If Flint calculates the sales tax, add 0.50% of the payment.

Do I need a website to sell through Flint?

No. Each Flint payment link is its own checkout page, so you can share it from your Instagram bio, a newsletter, a text, or a QR code on your market table. If you already have a site, point a Buy button at the link. Flint doesn't host a storefront or theme.

Who handles sales tax when I sell outside Etsy?

On Etsy orders, Etsy collects and remits US sales tax as the marketplace. On your own sales, your business is the seller: Flint can calculate the tax at checkout for 0.50% of the payment and reports what was collected, and you file the returns.

Can I keep my Etsy shop and sell through Flint too?

Yes, and many makers should. Etsy's policy prohibits moving an Etsy transaction off Etsy, so let buyers who find you on Etsy check out there. Use Flint for the customers you bring yourself: followers, newsletter readers, repeat buyers who come to you directly, and people at markets and pop-ups.
