03How it works

How is Flint different from a Snipcart buy button?

Snipcart reads your product from the page the button sits on and checks it again with a crawler at checkout. On Flint the catalog is the source of truth: your cart sends variant IDs, Flint prices the order, applies the promotion, computes the tax, and opens a hosted checkout.

Snipcart: a product in your markup
<!-- /products/canvas-tote: the product lives in your markup -->
<button class="snipcart-add-item"
  data-item-id="canvas-tote"
  data-item-name="Canvas tote"
  data-item-price="25.00"
  data-item-url="/products/canvas-tote">
  Add to cart
</button>

<!-- At checkout, Snipcart's crawler fetches /products/canvas-tote
     and compares this markup with the order before it is processed.
     Taxes: rates you enter, or a TaxJar or TaxCloud integration.
     Payments: the one gateway account you connect. -->

From Snipcart's product and security docs. Name, id, and price are required attributes, and the crawler compares the page at the item URL with the order.

Flint: an order by variant, then checkout
# 1. The cart, by variant. Flint prices each line, applies the code,
# and computes US sales tax after the discount.
curl -X POST https://api.withflintpay.com/v1/orders \

    "discounts": [{ "promotion": { "promotion_code": "LAUNCH20" } }],
    "tax": {
      "enabled": true,
      "calculation": { "mode": "automatic", "price_mode": "additive" }
    }
  }'

# 2. Hosted checkout for that order. Stock is held when payment starts.
curl -X POST https://api.withflintpay.com/v1/checkout-sessions \

      "success_redirect_url": "https://example.com/thanks",
      "cancel_redirect_url": "https://example.com/cart"
    }
  }'

Flint computes the subtotal, discount, and tax, holds the stock when payment starts, and sends order.paid once the buyer pays.

What does Snipcart cost compared with Flint?

Snipcart's 2% comes on top of your gateway's fees, so the comparison is Stripe plus Snipcart against Flint's card rate. At $50 orders Flint costs less at every volume below, and it still costs less with automatic tax on every order.

Monthly fees at $50 per order10 orders100 orders400 orders

Flint with automatic tax on every order (+0.50%)$24.95$249.50$998.00

Assumptions

  • Every order is $50, paid with a US card. International cards add 1.5% on Stripe and on Flint.
  • Stripe's standard US rate of 2.9% + 30¢ for domestic cards, from Stripe's pricing page.
  • Snipcart's published terms: 2% of monthly sales, replaced by a $20 monthly fee when sales are under $1,000.
  • Sales tax services are excluded on the Snipcart side. The last Flint row adds automatic tax to every order.
  • Above $1,000 a month, Flint costs less than Stripe plus Snipcart whenever the average order is above $4.50.

06Who Flint is for

Flint is built for US businesses selling online.

If that describes you, everything above is running the day you create your account.

US businesses

Flint onboards businesses in the US and pays out in USD to your own bank account. Buyers can pay from anywhere with a card.

Your own site or app

Your cart on any stack sends orders to the API, or buy buttons link to payment links you make in the dashboard.

Goods and services

Orders that ship, get picked up, deliver locally, or fulfill as a download or a service, with stock held at payment.

Developers and agents

A public OpenAPI spec, Node and PHP SDKs, a CLI, llms.txt, and MCP servers a coding agent can read.

07Switching

How do you switch from Snipcart to Flint?

One product page at a time. Each buy button either becomes a payment link or feeds your own cart, which creates a Flint order.

  1. Recreate the catalog

    POST /v1/products

    Create each product with its options and variants, and keep your Snipcart item id in metadata so old links and reports still resolve.

  2. Replace buy buttons with payment links

    POST /v1/payment-links

    For a page that sells one product, create a payment link from its variant and point the button at the link's URL. No cart code is needed.

  3. Or send your cart to the API

    POST /v1/orders

    For a multi-item cart, create an order from the cart's variants and quantities, then open a hosted checkout for it. Flint computes the discount and the tax.

  4. Fulfill from order.paid

    order.paid

    Move the work your Snipcart order webhook did to Flint's order.paid event, and verify Flint's webhook signatures.

  5. Go live

    Run each flow in a sandbox with Stripe's test cards, then switch to live keys. The paths stay the same.

FAQ

Questions people ask.

What is the best Snipcart alternative?

For a US business, Flint Pay. Snipcart is a cart that adds 2% of sales on top of your payment gateway's fees. Flint includes Stripe's card processing in its card rate, 3.79% + 35¢ with no monthly fee, and adds orders, product variants, inventory held at payment, stacking promotions, automatic US sales tax (+0.50% on taxed payments), shipping and pickup, returns, line-item refunds, payment links, and a hosted checkout and buyer account behind one API.

How much does Snipcart cost?

Snipcart's pricing page lists 2% of monthly sales, replaced by a $20 monthly fee when sales are under $1,000, plus your payment gateway's fees. With Stripe's standard 2.9% + 30¢, a $50 order costs $2.75 in Stripe and Snipcart fees together. Testing in Snipcart's test environment is free.

Is Flint a good alternative to Snipcart?

Yes, for a US business selling on its own website or app. At $50 orders, 100 orders a month cost $275.00 in Stripe and Snipcart fees and $224.50 on Flint, and Flint adds automatic US sales tax, returns, and line-item refunds to the same account. Sign up on the web or from the terminal with flint signup.

Does Snipcart work with Stripe?

Yes. Stripe is one of the gateways Snipcart lists, along with PayPal, Authorize.Net, Braintree, Mollie, Square, and custom gateways. You open and connect the gateway account yourself, each Snipcart account connects to one primary payment method, and the gateway's fees are separate from Snipcart's 2%. Flint also runs on Stripe, but Flint sets up the processing account and its rate already covers Stripe's fees.

Does Flint calculate sales tax automatically?

Yes, for US addresses. Flint computes sales tax after discounts from the order's tax location and the states where you're registered, records it per line, and charges 0.50% only on payments that carry tax. Flint does not register your business, file returns, or pay the tax you collect. Snipcart offers rates you enter, a TaxJar or TaxCloud integration, or a webhook you build.

Can I sell without writing cart code?

Yes. Create a payment link in the Flint dashboard or with one API call, and put its URL behind any button, in an email, or in a QR code. Each buyer who opens it gets a hosted checkout and their own order. A link can sell catalog products with shipping, take donations, sell event tickets, or start a subscription.

One account for the cart, the payment, and the tax.

Free sandbox, no credit card, no sales call. Create a product with variants, send a cart as an order, and take a test payment with tax computed after the discount.

Or run npm install -g @flintpay/cli && flint signup to create your account and a sandbox key from the terminal. CLI guide
